I gave this thread an ominous title to help draw NYI fans.

That said, Dipietro has been decent to good when healthy, but has also been injured a lot. What do you do if this continues?

Build a time machine. DiPietro has never been better than average. His best year was the 2006-07 campaign when he hovered around .920 but every other year has been at .920.

The Isles believed he would develop substantially over the last five years but that hasn't happened and may never due to chronic injury. He could come back and play fantastic but I would say the odds are 1/7. He'll come back, but I doubt he will ever be a superstar; certainly not a star worth a 12-year deal or whatever it was.

It was poor management to take him #1 overall, and even worse to to rush him along and then sign that contract on top of it all. I hope they lose their team because of him. And then I want to see Strachan masturbate on HNIC - literally.

I can think of more pleasant sights than a masturbating Al Strachan.

I still don't mind the DiPietro deal. It's cheap now, and will probably be cheaper in 10 years. He's a good goalie, and certainly above average in a league caught between old steady goalies retiring and younger ones coming up.

He's not exactly playing on a world class championship team. Put him on a contender and he'd develop quicker, put up better numbers and not get hurt as much.

I've seen every game since 1986. I'm thinking you're the one who hasn't been watching.

Superstar or not, he's better than many goalies 5+ million.

The worst case scenario (and only real way his deal is bad) is what is happening right now.

i.e.: The guy is plagued by constant injuries but all of them not serious enough to terminate his career.

What makes that contract terrible is the GM will have to allocate 5mil worth of salary before each season. That's 5mil he could have spent elsewhere.

1) If DiPietro is out for half a season, Snow will have to pay a premium to replace a goaltender in mid season.

2) If Snow decides to to spend that 5mil because Dipietro won't start the season (for whatever reason) he'll have to move it once DiPitero returns. Other GM's will know Snow is desperate and take advantage of the situation.

3) If they decide to develop another starting goaltender (or two) then DiPietro will always bump him out upon his return because he's the money goaltender.

It's a lose lose no matter what.

Pretty much. And that's on top of the assumption that he'll be playing well; an assumption I am loathe to make.

Its a win if Dipietro can play 60+ games a season at his real potential. I know that there's a risk (and the risk is materializing as we speak) but there's also a reward.

Dipietro is better or at least equal to a whole bunch of goalies that are paid more than him.

Your damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Hopefully Tavares can start a few games in net.
