Tough loss. But not a big deal, in the grand scheme of things.

* I think the most shocking thing, besides the goal total, was the two breakaways for SJ's fifth and sixth goal. On the first one, Stuart slashed at Michalek, who burned him and then sped in and ripped one past Ozzie. I think Flip's pursuit of Michalek may have added to Stuart's awkwardneess. On the second one, Rafalski and Lidstrom were caught napping. It's weird to see two breakaway goals in 5 minutes against this team.

* Milan Michalek was awesome tonight. This guy was supposed to be a stud, but was hurt so often he just kind of faded off everyone's radar.
Well, his numbers aren't great this year, but this guy was a beast last night.

* The game got embarassing in the second period. Doug Murray lined up Hossa real good, forcing the play back to the Detroit zone. On the next breakout, the puck came back toward Hossa on Murray's side. Hossa spun around, skated into Murray, and then dove. The ref bought it. Hossa scored on the PP. A few minutes later, Franzen tapped in a Datsyuk pass and the Wings had the lead and control of the momentum. But then Mikael Samuelson bumped Nabokov, who dove. And then Grier pushjed Samuesson, who dove. And then, when the ref was in the way, Samuelsson got up and acted like was going to go with Mike Grier. Please. Anway, the Wings got the extra penalty. 30 seconds later, Lilka chopped at Thornton. The slash hit Thorton's hand. But for some reason, Thrornton's skates became parallel to the ice. Five-on-three. Erhoff tied the game.
And the more importantly, the game which seemed to be going Detroit's way, evened out.

* The second period ended with some shenanigans between Rafalski and the sharks. Somehow, Johan Franzen got hurt. The Wings spent the first 15 minutes of the period struggling to regain their attack as they shuffled lines to adjust to Franzen's absence. During those 15 minutes, the Stars took control of the game.

* People are defending Ozzie, especially with the break-away goals and a five-on-three goal. But he allowed six goals.
Well, Ty Conklin is 16-6-1 with a 2.21 avg and .922 sv pct. He's sixth in goals against avg and ninth in sv. pct.
Osgood is 15-3-5 with a 3.23 avg and an ,883 sv pct. He is ranked 42nd on goals against avg. 42nd out of 45 goalies in the NHL. He's 44th in sv. pct. Tied for last.

* Hossa, Zetterberg and Datsyuk were the wings' best forwards last night. It's tough to swallow that one of those guys, almost surely, is gone last night.
They nearly willed the team into overtime.

* Every Wings defenseman got abused at least once last night, but Rafalski and Stuart got beat the most often.

It will be a good viewing experience on the televisor once the playoffs start. I'm in the East, and am simply not a big enough hockey fan to take time to watch the later West games. The playoffs may be a different story though.

The West is so deep, or maybe the East is so shitty. I think the fourth seed in the West could beat the top seed in the East in a seven game series.

I'd like to see the Sharks do something and go far, as they seem to have had their short comings in the past few years.

Sharks have been one of my favorite teams since they joined the league. Probably my favorite post WHA expansion team.
They have all the tools, except, perhaps, defense.

They had the Wings on the ropes last year in the playoffs until Guerin and Marleau screwed the pooch..

If Thorton and Marleau play like men in the playoffs, the Sharks have a great chance of going all the way.

Honestly, stats don't tell the whole story. At least not for the past few games. Osgood has had a much larger amount of shots against him in the past few games than Conklin has. Also, despite not having a solid game, he played well against Minnesota, Anaheim, and Dallas (49 shots, most in 20 years).

Conklin should be seeing more starts because he has played consistent, but I don't believe this is the decline of Osgood just yet.

I agree. And I bet Ozzie gets back to form enough to win the starting job by the playoffs.
But even though Ozzie has played in some of the tougher games (pens, dallas, ducks, sharks), it's hard to account for the difference in the stats betwen Conklin and Ozzie unless you admit that a great deal of Ozzie's misfortune's are his own doing.

I would have agreed with you in the first half of the season for sure. Having that nagging injury really made him an unvaluable goaltender to have. And he wasn't confident in himself.

A big reason why I don't include Osgood's performance in the beginning of the season is because of the fact he was supposed to bounce back. From what I've seen he has. I think the Sharks game was an exception even though I would only consider maybe 2 or 3 of those goals his fault entirely.

Great game, one of the best of the season. Very entertaining!
