The Ottawa Senators have acquired Ryan Shannon from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Lawrence Nycholat.

The 25-year old Shannon recorded career-highs in goals (5) and points (13) in 27 games with Vancouver last season.

Nycholat, 29, was originally acquired from Washington last season. The native of Calgary appeared in 77 games for Ottawa's AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senations in 2007-09.

Wasn't that Nycholat fellow thought to have a shot at cracking the Senators Top 6 this season? Who is it now?

I think the fact that he was on a one-way deal hampered his chances, as well as Ottawa doing a 1D for 2D trade with Tampa last week.

Last years defense had better last names, but as players I don't think this one will be much worse. I think the Corvo/Eaves trade was brutal, and I miss Corvo mostly from last years defense.

The two worst performers from last year are gone. Redden and Meszaros were bad last season, but their name looked good on the roster because of what they did in the past.

I can't stress how bad they were on a night to night basis. Not just one game here or there.

I think the Kuba/Meszaros flip is equal at a worst case scenario from Ottawa POV.

I also think that Wade Redden was so bad last year that a highly skilled rookie MAY be able to cover for him. That's a lot to put on a young player, playing the second toughest position in hockey, but Brian Lee played so amazing in the short playoff run, that I think he can do it. He was brilliant. Even at a slight regression, and minor burn-out from the first time high paced long hockey season....he should be able to fill Redden's spot somewhat maybe even completely, only because Redden has been brutal for two years.

The rest are kind of a wash. I like the leadership and toughness added. I hate slow hockey players, and always will. I'm hoping Smith can keep up, and that the world class off ice and post game workouts that Ottawa is known for will maybe shave a few years off of him. Hopefully his body holds up as well.

All in all, I like the team. Ottawa was still, somehow the second youngest team in the league last year. The maturing forwards up front will be better and more balanced than most people think. Last year the guys were tired - mentally and physically. The long roller coaster playoff run does that to teams. This year they are back with a long rest and an embarrassing season behind them, looking to prove the doubters wrong.

I'm really high on the goaltenders for the first time in a while. I don't think it will be long until we see a Elliott/Auld combo, which will be very good IMOMOMIIO.

Things are shaping up quite nicely if you ask me. Tons of depth at forward and on D. Murray upgraded the defence this offseason. So what if our defence doesn't score as much? We couldn't keep it out of the net in the 2nd half of last year. Murray addressed this. This was the highest scoring team in the league last year and I'm not going to be concerned if we don't score as much next year, but we keep more pucks out of our net as well.

If Hartsburg implements a nice, defensive system, our forwards stay somewhat healthy, and Gerber plays like a decent goaltender, this team can finish anywhere from 1-4 in the East next year.

I have a feeling these guys are going to be hungrier than ever.

Depends, just missing out on the Cup and being called out in the media for months on end didn't make Heatley do a fucking thing in the playoffs.

I hate hearing how are D has been devastated. Redden and Mez seem to be championed for their names only. They're "stars" in the eyes of NHL fanboys, and Kuba/Picard are not. Rico is bang on. If you watched the Sens on a nightly basis, you'd know how terrible Redden and Mez were for two years. Defensively, you can't get much worse... so don't be surprised when Kuba and Picard make you forget about the other two.

It's really no risk. Both players sucked. The only risk is losing out on Mez' potential.

I like this trade. Nycholat was on a one-way, and Murray addressed the log-jam at D. Shannon is like Patrick Eaves with much more speed, and less grit.

Training camp is going to be competitive. So many guys will be battling for spots in the bottom and top 6:
-Shannon
-Winchester
-Nikulin
-Bass
-Zubov
-Foligno

The main reason I spend more time on hf than here is because of the hockey talk. Granted, there isn't nearly enough oilers fans here for it to be worth it. There is me and uncle bucky. Oilers Guy Eddie is here, but he doesn't post alot. LMHF#1 doesn't really post much either.

I do post quite a bit in the hockey talk threads here though.
