Now that we're out of it for this season, what's the summer going to bring? Are we finally going to land that big name UFA? Maybe trade for that mythical big centre?

UFAs
Patrice Brisebois
Michael Ryder
Bryan Smolinski
Mark Streit

Streit has to be the no. 1 priority and as he's said on many occasions that he wants to stay, I believe this will be wrapped up before July at 2.5 to 3 millions/year. Ryder is definitely out, no room for an underachiever given the talent coming up. Brisebois could be re-signed for another year at the same price to play the same role. I think Gainey will let Smolinski walk to open the spot for Chipchura, who should be in Montreal full-time next year.

Possible opening night lineup
I doubt we'll see Koivu and Kovalev playing together. I believe Gainey will spend some time shopping for a RW for the Captain, with some interesting names available (Hossa, Demitra, Jagr and Rolston). Out of these, I believe the most likely to come to Montreal, based on the player's past statements, is Jagr. A high-impact RW is probably the only thing we should be interested in on the free agent market.

There's a strong possibility that Sergei Kostitsyn will be moved to centre since his skills set seems to fit the bill. Whatever happens, I expect the brothers to be paired on the same line. That will probably bump Plekanec from the first to third line. Latendresse will probably play one of the wings, but the other is up in the air. I wouldn't be surprised to see that spot left open for a youngster. Guys like Grabovski, D'Agostini, Maxwell, White, Stewart and perhaps even Pacioretty will be competing for the one open spot in training camp. There's also the possibility of playing Streit at RW and Bouillon on D.

Kostitsyn - Kostitsyn - Kovalev
Higgins - Koivu - ???
Latendresse - Plekanec - ???
Lapierre/Bégin - Chipchura/Lapierre - Kostopoulos/Stewart

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - O'Byrne
Gorges - Streit
Bouillon

Price
Halak

So, what's happening this summer?

So, what's Gainey looking at now? Jagr? Demitra? Naslund? Nagy? Still waiting on Sundin? Trade for someone? Sign a defenceman?

I'd say a Dman is more a priority at the moment, whereas another forward is more like icing (although, a centre would be very delicious icing). And who knows, we may need a back-up goalie to boot.

Laraque.

Well, that's not quite what I was expecting, but I don't hate it per se. I've always liked laraque off the ice and even on the ice at times.

As for Grabovski to the leafs: good riddance to that little whining cocksmoker. Not bad for BG, turning a 5th round cancer into a body and a 2nd.

Our Habs get finally a legit enforcer, the toughest of the league per se.I like his play with the puck down low and he's hard to knock off him with it.Not exactly a Neil, but he's able to play hockey and drop the gloves when it's needed. Not a liability but useful

I really like the move,look at our bottom forwards;

Begin.Kostopoulos,Smolinski(if he stays here),Laraque,Lapierre,(Stewart*,Milroy* )and Latendresse.Lots of size, toughness and grit.

And Bob hasn't done his shopping yet!

Not to mention that signing Laraque likely means also that Dandenault is on his way out.

Agreed, we can't have two enforcers.

I like the Laraque signing, pests like Neil have caused us many problems in the past season, but the mere presence of Georges will probably calm them down. It could mean one of Lapierre, Kostopoulos or Bégin is on his way out though. I'd bet on the latter.

I think it's close to ten years now since I can last say that I saw an enforcer do anything to change behavior on the ice.

Any chance Grabovski develops into anything?

You haven't watched the Habs play against an enforcer in 10 years then.

If he pulls his head out of his ass and stops acting like the superstar he thinks he is, sure. But he was the closest thing Montreal had from a locker room cancer last year. The coaching staff thought it was better for him to stay away from the team for a while after he walked out during the West coast trip.

The Habs must have some big pussies then.

Yes, yes we had big pussies. Like Ribeiro.

Getting out of Montreal has done wonders for him.

For clarity's sake.

Forwards
Alex Kovalev
Tomas Plekanec
Andrei Kostitsyn
Saku Koivu
Alex Tanguay
Chris Higgins
Sergei Kostitsyn
Maxim Lapierre
Guillaume Latendresse
Kyle Chipchura
Steve Bégin
Georges Laraque
Tom Kostopoulos
Matt D'Agostini
Greg Stewart

Defencemen
Andrei Markov
Mike Komisarek
Roman Hamrlik
Ryan O'Byrne
Josh Gorges
Francis Bouillon
Mathieu Dandenault (bought out?)
Mathieu Carle
Jean-Philippe Côté
Pavel Valentenko

Goaltenders
Carey Price
Jaroslav Halak
Marc Denis

My guess is Sergei will replace Streit on the PP, probably partnering with Markov at the blue line. The top 6 is basically unchanged, unless Carle or Valentenko outplay Bouillon at the camp and get to share (at least) the #6 spot. We could potentially have two above average scoring lines (Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev and Tanguay-Koivu-Kostitsyn), an excellent third line (Higgins-Chipchura-Latendresse) and a very good energy line (Lapierre with a two of Laraque, Bégin, Kostopoulos, D'Agostini and Stewart). Adding Sundin would be great, giving us three very dangerous scoring line by bumping Plekanec to the third line. How sweet would that be?

Tanguay - Sundin - Kovalev
Kostitsyn - Koivu - Kostitsyn (bring out the white hoods)
Higgins - Plekanec - Latendresse
Chipchura - Lapierre - Laraque/Kostopoulos/Bégin

If I was right on one thing, it's that 08-09 actually feels like a hangover.
