This is going to be interesting. I am hoping that most of the best players show up. Please no injuries and stupid politics.

Franzen definitely won't be ready? Any updates on him?

It doesn't get much easier for Russia...

I look at that and think the russians have the roughest group out of the three favorites (Canada, Russia, Sweden)....

The Slovak team will lack depth... but their top 2 lines, and top 2 defence will be as good as any of the big 6.... They are much better than the third team in any other group. (ie Switzerland and Belarus).

Really? Canada are the ones who have to play the US.

The Czechs aren't developing enough young players to really challenge. The Slovaks lack depth.

It depends on what you choose. Two near-gimmies with one great opponent or one near-gimmie with two decent opponents. I'd take the latter. If Russia loses those it's their fault. It's all about getting first place.

Sweden does have the most appealing position, although the Finns are feisty and have good goalies.

Well yeah... I was looking at them having two tough games where Canada and Sweden both have one. Granted though USA and Finland are both better than the czechs. I was just thinking the difference between them was less than the difference between Slovakia and Switzerland and Belarus.

Realistically though, all 3 should be 3-0

Canada will have the easiest route to Gold.

Sweden will have a tough time with the Finns but that's it.

Russia and the Czech's are gonna destroy each other.

Canada vs. Sweden for the Gold.

Like Lemieux in 2002? Don't underestimate these old guys. I wouldn't trust forsberg for a full season. I wouldn't trust him for a 2 month playoff run... but for an olympic tournament over two weeks? I could see him playing amazing.

Like half of Team Canada in 2006. Forsberg proved he was washed beyond belief when he was a Nashville fucking Predator.

Remember that greatness? Don't worry, nobody does. And that was almost 3 years ago, minus maybe 10 days.

Canada 2006? Yeah when you have a bunch of guys instead of 1 it makes a difference.

And Forsberg with the Avs after his Nashville stint was pretty damn good that one playoff series vs the Wild.

So when Canada took a bunch of old guys that were once great, it was a fuck up?
When Sweden takes a Forsberg 3 years after the fact of him being a Predator - he's a threat?

Good for Sweden, they got Forsberg. It speaks more about the team they have when we're debating Stamkos, Carter, Lecavalier, St. Louis, etc.

And Sweden is taking guys that were good in 1998. It's like Team Canada naming my boy Lindros to the team.

1) We are talking one guy... .Not a team full of old guys. Sundin isnt going. Markus Naslund isn't going. Its one fucking guy. A lot more similar to a Lemieux situation in 2002 than a Team Canada 2006.
2) Obviously Sweden isn't as deep as Canada when we talk about guys as Canada... Doesn't mean they don't have high end talent. And they did leave a pretty good player in Samuellson off the team. They've still got the Sedins, Zetterberg, Backstrom, Lundqvist, Alfredsson, etc... etc... etc... they'll have a good team.
3) Why are we bringing up his Nashville days? He was better than that more recently with Colorado.

Again you can disagree... but I bet you he will be an important part of Team Sweden.

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/hockey/news/newsid=42901.html#ovechkin+ready+lead+russia+gold

Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk, a possible linemate of Ovechkin when the Russians open against Latvia, was amazed at the speed of the gap-toothed player whose dazzling solo efforts for goals have become NHL legends.
"I would enjoy it better if I was a little faster," Datsyuk said, adding that his best strategy was likely to give Ovechkin the puck and get out of his path to the goal.
"It's a good idea," Ovechkin said. "If you don't move you will be crushed."
