You have 2 rookies that aren't counting until they play their 10th games afaik.
so if you don't count them you have a total cap hit of $63,257,000, making you $3,257,000 over the cap.

Armstrong dropped, I'll keep on top of the comings and goings of my roster from here on in, I've been ker-jiggered with RL shit lately. If anyone feels like calling me out in this thread feel free, since this is a secondary yahoo account I got for this league I might not be on top of it like I am with the Life of John Muckler or my local cash leagues... Hold the bus up there. Not active means AHL. All guys on a one-way ticket count do they not? You can't just say that a guy in the press box counts as zero....can you?
For simplicity of the pool, the only guys that you can count for zero should have a red IR or NA beside their names in Yahoo.

However, one issue here ... multiple people on IR for us means that there's zero risk in me selecting a player like Gaborik or Havlat who both have a history of injuries. Maybe we should make it that the cap space made available by a second person on LTIR is cut in half.

The risk is wasting a high pick on Gaborik and having to use the waiver wire to fill in. Also, you still have to have the cap space when they come back so I don't see the problem. Edit: there should be at least two free IR slots anyway.

I can't create any more IR slots on the yahoo system without starting the league all over again. We can vote on it for next year.

Ok, I thought the protected list was for players not in the NHL and the IR was for players on the injured reserve.
As in, aren't they two separate things? What's the deal with our IR rules here? Yahoo has an IR slot which allows you to pick up an extra player that way, if someone is on your team they should stay on your team. If guys are available in the yahoo system but on teams, it's just added confusion.
If I see an available guy who's active in some form, I'm working on the assumption they're available. Kind of annoying if they aren't. How long can you keep a guy on yahoo waivers but on your team?

No. I didn't change my mind. I thought I had broken the rules and so I dropped Greiss.
I dropped Repik and Espo from my Yahoo! roster thinking they would be protected and not count against my cap. Having done that, I picked up Greiss.
It then occurred to me that may be illegal in our pool in that I may be over the protect limit and that Repik and Espo may be exposed to waivers.
I then posted on here that I had made a mistake and that I would drop Greiss - suggesting to others not to claim my guys as it had been a technical mistake.
In short: I still wanted Greiss but I also wanted to protect Repik and Espo.
If it comes down to a choice, I will take Repik and Espo being protected over Greiss as an FA.

Esposito is already protected, you have 5 protect spots. If you want Repik protected too, you'll have to pick one of these guys to drop:
Sopping Wet Lilies:
Markstrom
Cowen
Irving
Subban
Esposito
You only have 24 players on your roster, leaving one space on your Yahoo! roster for either Repik or Greiss, but no space for them on your protect list unless you drop one. Since you said you want Repik and Espo above, you can add Repik back onto your roster yourself on Yahoo!, don't need me to do it for you.

Filpulla and Clarkson dropped (both on IR). Please place on my protect list (I believe only Vishnevisky is on my protect list).
I picked up Brunette and Clowe as FA's. I don't believe that they are on anyone's protect list.
I want to make sure that this is kosher, so I'll wait to put them on the ice.
How many guys can be added to the IR? I thought we were only allowed one on the roster and one on the protection list??

My other question is how does the off season work? Do we a) lose only guys who become unrestricted free agents? or b) do we just get to pick our keepers? or some hybrid of both?
If a):
-what happens to RFA's? and guys who sign extensions?
-can I add / drop guys in the offseason or not?
If b):
- is the number of keepers unlimited or how many do we get?
The original post was as follows:
Once a player's true NHL contract is up, he becomes a free agent. Unrestricted Free Agents will be available in the UFA draft to be held at the end of each September immediately preceding the next year's league. We won't have any such draft this September 2009, but will in '10. RFAs cannot be drafted, and remain with you regardless if they switch NHL teams. You must consider the possibility of their contractual raises each summer when planning your long term goals.
I've just gotta plan my course for next year. My vote would be some sort of hybrid where:
1. All players that were slated as UFA's in 2010 whether they are extended or not become UFA's. Available in the draft.
2. Unlimited keepers, but you must decide a week or two prior to the UFA draft which players you are keeping and which will re-enter draft.
3. Player trading is allowed after the finals, however adding/dropping players is not. (But teams must stay below the 30 player max.)
Rule 1: Keeps some turnover in the league as players are often extended before July 1.
Rule 2: Gives GM's some flexibility without having to do a major sell off at the trade deadline of RFA's going onto steep raises.
Rule 3: Allows some pre-draft/draft-day movement of players and/or picks.
That's my two cents anyway...
Other questions/thoughts:
- When we set up next years pool make sure there are 2 IR slots, so we don't have any of this confusion on protected players.
- The cap number should be set at the actual cap + $X Million to account for the 3rd goalie slot.
- Do we want to consider any sort of expansion provided there are any interested parties from non-traditional hockey markets?
and yes, I'm a Bettman Cockfag...

Being an RFA is completely irrelevant to our league, even if they're bought out. We'll only peg free agency to UFAs as of Jan 1st of the year of the UFA draft. If a player is resigned by his team in March, they're still a UFA in our league. I will make the official list on Jan 1st. You're allowed to keep as many people as you want up to the 30 player limit, but are at no time allowed to exceed the salary cap (which will be voted on, we can do this very soon if you guys want) except from the trade deadline until the draft. There will be a trade ban from the deadline until the end of the season and a separate signing/dropping freeze from the trade deadline until the day of the draft.
I haven't decided on whether there'll be a separate UFA draft and a rookie draft - what do you guys think?
- When we set up next years pool make sure there are 2 IR slots, so we don't have any of this confusion on protected players.
The problems I had setting up the league(s) this year were largely around Yahoo changing their system from last year. It used to be 30 players and I'm pretty sure you could add a 31st so long as one of your players was on the Yahoo system's IR. What happened this year is that there's a 25 player max no matter what, and if you want to add somebody to your IR, it doesn't open a spot for you to add somebody else. So if there are to be two official Yahoo IR slots, it will shorten your roster to 23. I think if anything, I'm willing to extend the protection list past 30 players, let us accumulate up to 35 maybe, and make the rookie draft more interesting.
- The cap number should be set at the actual cap + $X Million to account for the 3rd goalie slot.
Sounds fair , anybody else disagree?
- Do we want to consider any sort of expansion provided there are any interested parties from non-traditional hockey markets?
I think the max on Yahoo is 20, so up to that I'm down for it. We will of course have to have an expansion draft each year for the new schmucks. That's okay, I don't mind giving up Fitzpatrick and Denis.

So we're allowed two IR's, but do additional IR's count against the cap? My team for example currently has four players; Hemsky, Franzen, Selanne and Grabner, listed as IR. Hemsky and Franzen are my official IR's, but does Selanne and Grabner count against my cap?

No injured player counts against the cap, Yahoo or Protected. Protected players not on the one 2nd IR slot do count.

IMO, just one draft as we had this year. It's then your choice to pick up players that can help you now or down the road.

Well that doesn't seem to make sense because currently we have 25 + 1 IR, and Yahoo help indicates we can have a max roster of 25 + up to 5 IR...but if it can't be done, it can't be done.
I'm not sure I like expanding the farm/protection list further, as people should have to evaluate their farm and let guys go if they think they'll be busts. But I'll go with the consensus.

In terms of expansion, my thoughts are that:
- we allow a max of 2 expansion teams per year.
- expansion teams can select up to 10 guys in an expansion draft (from the unprotected players or the waiver wire on the trade deadline) alternating in draft order if there are two teams.
- Existing teams can protect up to 18 players.
- Expansion teams get one UFA pick prior to the draft, and then they will select in the middle of the draft round.

I would like a cap number set soon, just to have a rough idea. Plus it would increase the value of a couple of my players.
Can anyone clarify if I'm keeping Cam Ward? I don't remember if he was supposed to be a ufa or rfa at the end of this season.
I like having draft picks mixed in with current players for the draft, makes choices a little harder. Then again, I've mainly done my protected list since after the draft so someone like me would be at a disadvantage with a pure prospect draft.

If that's the case, Yahoo doesn't let me work it like that from the commish tools. It's 25 including 1 IR. If I had added 5 IR it'd be 25 including 5 IR. I don't think it extends past that.

I think it's fair to say that the player's contractual worth should be tied to the circumstances of having been waived (indicative that he's not worth his full contract apparently to one team at least), so the technical cap hit of $1.375 is what should stick.

Was there a minimum games rule? I thought I remember something about this when I signed up or was that another pool?
I just worry about guys tanking for 1st overall by leaving positions open. I look down to the bottom rosters and see a couple guys stashing good young guys on the bench and having multiple W, D, and G positions empty, or inactive managers not utilizing the IR.
My thoughts are you should make a minimum 90% of your starts for C,W, and D, and 60% for G, else you forfeit your first round pick, and your second round pick would be in order of final standings.
Masterplan
12-30-2009, 08:59 AM
So I looked it up the minimum games I remembered was for goalies:
- Goalies -
You must ice your goalies a minimum of 82 games. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of a draft pick. Choice of pick is commensurate with the severity of your difference between goalie games played and the 82 bar. Once you reach 82 games you will no longer be required to skate your goalies by the Yahoo! system.
But that was for 2 goalie starts, now we have three, so I would assume that the 50% rule still applies thus requiring 123 starts?
But, IMO there should also be a similar rule for skaters but at a much higher start rate because they are more plentiful and typically play 70-80 games a season.

What is the average goalie games played by each team in the league? I'll crack the numbers on that in a bit. We may need to take emergency rule changing into effect if the numbers look scary, but I'm guessing that may be inappropriate. We should make this an official issue to discuss for next year's league. Part of the failures of this year will serve to inform the success of next year - that's the beauty of a keeper league.
On that, what do you guys think about 3 goalie starts ? I did it because I hate having goalies earn big on my bench and that happens to a far less degree with skaters.

It forces people to become goalie whores in order to win. Most at the top have four goalies to make up the max games.
Maybe if you were to reduce the max games to something achievable by two starts and a backup then three starts would make sense, but 3 slots at 82 games, you gotta fill as many of those starts as you can to have a shot.
My real concern is guys tanking by dropping NHLers and loading up on prospects not in the NHL. Thus packing their farm and still getting a high pick. Minimum games for skaters should be instituted to stop things from getting ridiculous. I mean if I'm near the bottom at this point I drop all my deadweight load up of prospects hoping to hit the lottery, while ensure a top 3 pick in the draft. The purpose of a pool is to attempt to get the most points possible every time, not three years down the road.
