PHOENIX - The National Hockey League has loaned an unknown amount of money to the Phoenix Coyotes for payroll and rent payments.

The Arizona Republic online edition reported if the team fails to pay its debt, the league can take it over, according to financial records filed with Maricopa County Recorder's Office.

The day after the team agreed to loan terms Feb. 24 with the NHL, it paid Glendale nearly $351,000 in overdue arena rent payments.

The loan terms give the NHL more control over the future of the struggling Coyotes, including the possible relocation of the team.

The NHL and team owner Jerry Moyes declined to comment.

Beset by annual losses reported at US$30 million, Moyes is trying to sell all or part of the team.

Whether the rest of you agree or not, I like what Bettman's done with the game with a couple exceptions and the relocation of the jets to Phoenix is a horrible disaster.

This team had better be moving somewhere soon, hate to sound like a Canadian Hockey Patriot, but I want the team moved back to Canada.

The Yotes really need to either make the playoffs or get out of that lease.

It's a new arena, how bad can the lease be?

The problem isn't the lease itself... its the location of the lease. Hockey is clearly not working in phoenix arizona.

No argument here. None of their teams are really viable. The Diamondbacks are in a financial mess as well, the Cardinals... well NFL teams don't have to do much to turn a profit (TV contracts alone cover about 80% of the cap); and I don't know anything about the Suns I bet they're not sleeping on piles of cash either.

This can't be good at all.

If Shoalts was right all along please ignore the little cartoon I posted in that other thread. The thread Dr. Loove made that made himself look dumb. That one.

I think the best name possible would be: Ontario Stanley Cup Champions.

So it begins

The president of the Phoenix Coyotes says the NHL has not assumed control of the cash-strapped hockey club.

Glendale city manager Ed Beasley told The Arizona Republic that the league is running the team and has promised to reimburse the city for parking fees and security costs at Jobing.com Arena, which is located in Glendale.

But Coyotes president Doug Moss said Thursday that team officials remain in control of the franchise.

I have to wonder, is the NHL in charge but they're not saying that yet because Gretzky is such a prominent figure for the Coyotes?

Well if this article turns out to be true we can be sure that the Coyotes won't be touching the cap limit any time in the forseeable future.

I wonder if Michael Jordan ever wanted to try his hand at hockey.

The return of Briere would help fix that. Make it happen Phoenix!

Got a TSN text that Balsilie offered $212.5M for the Coyotes but the offer is only good if the team moves to Southern Ontario.

Medvedev, the KHL guy is also considering buying a team.

"It's a very strange situation when real hockey (cities) like Quebec don't have an NHL team."

Thanks... If you want to discuss it more, we are talking on the main NHL board.

The team he runs (Your Charlotte Bobcats) is probably the Yotes/Thrashers of the NBA.

When he was involved in the Wizards they sucked too.
